SRI LANKA: DEMINED IN 2020
«Back
Thirty-five (35) BOZENA operators and mechanics have recently been trained and certified in Sri Lanka, and the on-the-job training is to continue during the following months. This under the support of Mines Advisory Group (NGO, UK), which closely cooperates with Sri Lankan military engineers on the ongoing projects. BOZENA systems create a significant part of the mine clearance capacities within the country (20 units).
Humanitarian demining activities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka are progressing faster than in other countries and only 134 square kilometres are left for demining. Landmines and unexploded ordnances have been cleared in an area of 1,912 square kilometers out of the 2,046 square kilometres of identified area in the Northern and Eastern provinces at the end of September 2011. "We hope to finish all the demining activities before the end of 2020", Sri Lankan autorities say. (www.dailynews.lk)
